Dillon's Cast

Dillon finally got his hard cast on last Tuesday. We took a family trip back to the surgeon's to get his cast. First they took some x-rays to make sure everything was still in place and to make sure his arm is healing correctly. Then Dillon got to pick the color of his cast. We were sure he would go for blue, but at first he wanted black and then he wanted rainbow. The nurse helped me talk him into either green or orange since those colors were the best for his friends to sign his cast on. He decided to go with the green. The nurse was very nice and was so great with Dillon. He loves to talk through everything so she listened to him and explained everything that she was doing to him. He had to lay very still on the bed while the nurse and another helper took off the bandages from the surgery. Once the bandages were off we could see the pins that were put in during surgery. That was enough to make me a little queasy! Once the cast was on the surgeon came in to show us the x-rays and confirm everything looked great. Dillon only has to wear the cast for 2 weeks! He will go back on the 12th to get the cast off and the pins will be pulled out. They will pull the pins out while Dillon is awake and alert. I really hope Dillon does OK and that it is not painful for him. The nurse told us to give him a dose of Ibuprofen before he gets to the appointment and then a dose of Loratab as soon as he gets to the parking lot. She claims it is not painful, but the change in pressure might be bothersome. Unfortunately there is no way I can handle that appointment so Cameron will be taking care of that.

He has been doing so well with the adjustment of having a broken arm. Since he is left handed and he broke his left arm I was afraid he would not be able to write, eat, get dressed etc., but he is doing great using his right hand. He has really only needed help getting his shirt on. It is also such a relief to me knowing he has some extra protection now.
